Getting to Tartu

2024. Plan your trip information is also here

The Tartu airport has direct flights to Helsinki. The nearest biggest Estonian airport in Tallinn is a 2.5-hour bus ride or a 2-hour train ride away.

BY BUS

The bus is a convenient way to get from Tallinn to Tartu. Each day more than 30 express buses make the 2.5-hour trip from the capital, departing from Tallinn's bus station at Lastekodu 46. The same buses stop at Tallinn Airport (Lennujaam) before leaving for Tartu. The ride costs about €15. See www.tpilet.ee for a complete schedule, tickets, and prizes. Buses arrive at Tartu's bus station at Turu 2. The buses have free WiFi throughout.

BY TRAIN

For those coming from Tallinn, Estonia’s shiny, new trains offer a fast and comfortable way to reach Tartu at roughly the same price as the buses. Trains make the trip from Tallinn's Balti Jaam train station each day (info at www.elron.ee). Rides take about 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on whether it's an express train. The trains have free WiFi throughout. First-class sections have comfier seats, and more legroom and guarantee you a table as well as a place to plug in your gadgets. Booking your seats in advance is also recommended as the trains tend to fill up, especially on Fridays and Sundays.

BY PLANE

The city's only direct air connection is Finnair's service from Helsinki, which takes 50 minutes and runs once or twice per day. For a list of scheduled flights, visit www.tartu-airport.ee.
Getting to town is possible with a taxi or Bolt, the 11 km journey will cost around €11-14.

BY CAR

Driving from Tallinn is fairly simple. Just head out of town on Tartu mnt. and once you get past the airport, it's a straight shot all the way down.

FROM RIGA

You can also reach Tartu from Riga Airport (245  km from Tartu, the journey takes around 5-6 hours). Information about international bus routes: www.luxexpress.eu, www.ecolines.ee, www.eurolines.ee.
